Springer Spaniel Breed Overview

The Springer Spaniel, or widely known as the English Springer Spaniel, is a medium sized dog, that was developed for retrieval and flushing the game. They are very excitable, loyal and energetic dogs, and have a strong affection towards owners and family.

The Springer Spaniels are very intelligent and enthusiastic dogs that were firstly bred for hunting purposes. That is the reason why they love to go for long walks and play fetch, which means that you have to exercise them frequently.

They come in few colours such as:

  • Dark brown with white markings
  • Black with white markings
  • Combination of dark brown, black and white

They adore water and swimming, due to their hunting past. Their coats are medium length, but still, they can get dirty quite fast.

Origins of Springer Spaniel

The Springer Spaniels were Shropshire Spaniels and old English Norfolk that was introduced to Britain by Romans thousands years ago. The main fact that you have to know is that they were developed for hunting purposes.

During the 19th century, breeders combine Springer Spaniels with Welsh Springer Spaniels, and that is how Cocker Spaniel was born.

Springer Spaniel Temperament

The Springer Spaniel is one of the most intelligent dog breeds. They are developed first as hunting dogs, and later as companions. You can expect from them to be energetic, loyal and enthusiastic dogs.
They are playful and intelligent and have lots of energy which mean that you have to give them a level of attention. They need to walk at least once a day in order to stay healthy and happy.Springer Spaniels can easily become mischievous and bored when you don’t pay attention to them.
