English Pointer Breed Overview
The English Pointer, or widely known as the only Pointer, is a large breed of dogs that were originally bred in order to be a gun dog. They are considered as one of the oldest breeds in England that dates back to 300 years.
They have smooth, short and shiny coat that comes in different patterns and colours such as
- Lemon
- Orange
- White
Pointers don’t require regular brushing because they don’t shed at all. They are very energetic and require high-levels of exercise in order to prevent restlessness. In case that you don’t have time to put the effort, you should not consider Pointer is the dog for you. They need an owner that is energetic and active as them, because they love to walk and run, but not as a water retriever.
Pointers can reach up to 70 cm in height and 34 kg in weight.
Their life expectancy is 15 years.
Origins of Pointer
This particular term was used in order to explain how they point the prey. Many experts believe that they originate from Spain, but it is now quite familiar. They have been the main part of English culture since the 16th century.
The modern ones became popular after Spanish Pointers were brought to England and cross-breeding them with Foxhound Greyhound, setters, and Bloodhound.
English Pointer Temperament
They require low maintenance and you can easily train them due to their intelligence. Pointers are loyal, affectionate and patient companions that are very adaptable to emotions of the owner. They adore children, and other pets, especially if they were raised together.
Common English Pointer Conditions and Diseases
Demodectic Mange – These mites are passed down genetically and what is most important, you don’t have to worry because these mites are common, and don’t cause any issues. However, in case that your dog has weakened the immune system, that could lead to demodectic mange that is characterized by hair loss, and red and scaly skin. You should discuss the condition with the vet. You just have to cover your English Pointer with PetCare in order to have a fast reaction after some injury.
